Building Confidence – A Key To Improving Performance

7108756585_dc475ab67e_zConfidence is defined as the belief or degree of certainty that you can successfully perform a desired behavior (Weinberg & Gould, 2003). Confidence is the master key. It opens the door to higher levels of excellence. The most consistent factor distinguishing highly successful athletes is confidence.

Confidence is a result of particular thinking habits more so than physical talent, opportunity, or previous success. These thinking habits when persistently practiced result in higher levels of confidence.

Confidence is a result of how we think and how that thinking affects our performance. Read the next paragraph on physical conditioning. Combine this with work on building your confidence through the attached ability rating activity.

Confidence is very dependent on our perception of our self. It is also dependent on the physical state of our bodies. Physical conditioning or exercise is a superb confidence builder. The benefits of exercise are improved self-image, better blood flow, more oxygen to our muscles, especially our brain, and a staying power. Think of a very simple thing that exercise does; it brings more oxygen and increased blood flow to our brain.

This allows us to think better which allows us to perform better. If we are constantly tired, dull and unfocused how can we perform our best. On the other hand, if we have strength and a physical system that is functioning better through exercise, we can perform better.

Use this activity to change your thinking habits and performance habits to create a stronger belief in what you can do.

Purpose:

The purpose of this exercise is to determine your strengths and weaknesses in the different areas of your game and in your thinking. We can play to our strengths and we can focus more of our practice on our weaknesses, but only if we know what they are.

Directions:

Determine your strengths and weaknesses in terms of your confidence level by answering the following questions.

Rate your confidence on both shot-making skills and mental skills:
